Psychometric properties of early childhood development assessment tools in low- and middle- income countries: a systematic review

Valid and reliable measurement of early childhood development (ECD) is critical for monitoring and evaluating ECD- related policies and programmes. Although ECD tools developed in high- income countries may be applicable to low- and middle- income countries (LMICs), directly applying them in LMICs can be problematic without psychometric evidence for new cultures and contexts. Our objective was to systematically appraise available evidence on the psychometric properties of tools used to measure ECD in LMIC.

Findings in Child Development in Children Who Grew Up During the COVID‐19 Pandemic in Two Countries

The COVID‐19 pandemic created an unprecedented situation for families worldwide, with its potential impact on child development remaining uncertain, particularly within Latin American communities. This study aimed to analyze child development in children from Costa Rica and Mexico who grew up during COVID‐19 pandemic. A cross‐sectional study was conducted using a convenience sample of 183 children; a historical control group of Costa Rican children (n = 171) was alsoincluded. Child development was assessed using the EDIN‐II in Costa Rica and the EDI in Mexico, along with a parental questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, chi‐square tests, and logistic regression analysis were performed, with a significance level of 0.05. Significant differences were found when comparing the risk of development delay, particularly in the overall score and the fine motor domain score. The probability of overall delay was associated with the child’s sex, age, maternal education level and whether the primary caregiver role was shared by both parents or fulfilled by a single parent. In Costa Rica, the development of children assessed post‐pandemic was lower than that of children assessed pre‐pandemic. The probability of these delays was associated with growing up during the pandemic, child’s sex, and families’ Socioeconomic Development Index. These results contribute to understanding child development during the COVID‐19 context and provide a foundation for future research.

Meanings of Continuing Bonds in Bereaved Costa Rican Men: A Mixed-Methods Study

Continuing bonds refer to an ongoing relationship with the deceased loved one, which can manifest internally or externally. Internalized continuing bonds involve a mental representation of the deceased person as a secure base, while externalized continuing bonds involve a perception of the deceased person as still being physically present. While this phenomenon has been widely studied, a gap remains in understanding the specific expressions and meanings men attribute to continuing bonds. This mixed-methods study addresses the gap in knowledge surrounding the meanings of continuing bonds in bereaved Costa Rican men. By connecting quantitative and qualitative data, this research aims to enhance the understanding of this phenomenon through an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative phase utilized convenience sampling, with 170 participants completing an online questionnaire that included sociodemographic data, measures of mediators of mourning, and the Continuing Bonds Scale. Results indicated frequent expressions of both internalized and externalized continuing bonds, with significant differences observed based on the degree of kinship with the deceased. The qualitative phase involved purposive sampling of 12 bereaved individuals for semi-structured interviews guided by a thematic guide. Five themes were identified: loss emblems, mourners’ ecology, memory landscapes, sense-based realities, and symbolic images. The sequential integration suggests that continuing bonds supported adaptation to grief and integration into a new reality without the deceased. Continued research is needed to better understand continuing bonds in men’s grief and to develop targeted interventions, such as specialized individual and group support services for men to promote healthy grief adaptation.

Humanized oncology nursing care in a person with gastric cancer: A case report

Cancer impacts the person’s physical health, psychosocial and spiritual wellbeing. The humanization of care is an essential element to achieve integral wellbeing of the individual. The aim of this article is to present a clinical case, using the nursing process with the NANDA, NOC and NIC taxonomies, and based on the principles of Watson’s theory of humanized care. The participant is a 45-year-old woman with gastric cancer in palliative stage. The assessment was performed using Gordon’s functional patterns and the Watson Caritas Patient Score scale to evaluate the care received previously in the health system. Eight nursing diagnoses were identified, prioritizing 3 diagnoses using the clinical reasoning web (decisional conflict, anxiety, and ineffective self-management of health). Expected outcomes and nursing interventions were planned and implemented through moments of care using health education through tele-nursing and the intentional use of Caritas processes of care in the transpersonal relationship. The results were evaluated with the scales of the indicators and anxiety was also evaluated with the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Health education in oncology nursing contributed to improve informed decision making, reducing anxiety and providing emotional support to facilitate self-management of health. The participant perceived as humanized care throughout the sessions, reflected in the final evaluation with the Watson Caritas Patient Score scale.

Self-care practices during the gender transition of Costa Rican transgender men

Relatively little is known about the unique needs and issues faced by transgender men and their self-care practices during gender transition. This study aimed to analyse self-care practices during gender transition through the life histories of a group of Costa Rican transgender men. A qualitative study with a sociohistorical
design employing a thematic life history approach was conducted with fourteen participants between April and September 2022. Data were analysed using Content Analysis. Three categories were developed concerning self-care: (i) the shaping of self-care practices throughout different life stages; (ii) self-care practices related to masculinising the body; and (iii) self-care practices on the margins of a cisheteronormative society. The identified self-care practices took place with the goal of materialising men’s gender identity socially, legally and medically. While self-care plays a keyrole in supporting individuals throughout the transition process, it is limited in its capacity to ensure comprehensive well-being. The social prejudice and violence encountered by transgender men poses a challenge to achieving full well-being. External pressures and adversities limit the effectiveness of self-care practices, high lighting the need for broader systemic change to enhance the overall health and wellness of transgender men in Costa Rica.

The Positive Thinking Skills Scale: Validity and Reliability Evidence among Spanish Speaking College Students in Costa Rica

Identifying depressive cognitions in Spanish speaking college students can be vital to prevent the development of clinical depression. This study examines the cross-cultural equivalence as well as the reliability and the validity of the Spanish version of the Positive Thinking Skills Scale (SPTSS) among 286 Spanish speaking college students. The data analysis was done using Structural Equation Modeling, with the R package lavaan. The results provide solid support for the scale’s reliability and validity among Spanish speaking college students as demonstrated by high ordinal α of 0.904 and McDonald ω of 0.859. The findings of the study provide evidence of the construct validity of the (S-PTSS) as indicated by a negative correlation with both Anxiety (r = -0.384) and Loneliness (r = -0.508). The S-PTSS is a useful screening tool for depressive cognition among Spanish speaking college students.

Early Childhood Development and Family Adaptation During the COVID‐19 Pandemic: A Mixed Methods Study

The COVID‐19 pandemic caused significant disruptions in daily life. This mixed‐methods study aimed to connect the developmental levels of children aged 1–3 years in 2020–2021 who grew up during the pandemic with their families’ adaptation experiences, providing a comprehensive understanding of child development. The quantitative phase included 183 children, while 18 families participated in qualitative interviews. Quantitative results revealed delays in children’s overall development, particularly in fine motor skills. Qualitative findings highlighted the coping strategies parents employed to navigate new challenges. Sequential integration analysis showed that parents prioritized meeting basic needs but faced obstacles such as limited time, lack of knowledge, and insufficient professional guidance, which restricted opportunities for early learning and provide enriching environments for child development. This mixed‐methods research shed light on the developmental risks faced by children in two underexplored Latin American contexts.
